Machines for Art: The Architecture of 20th-Century Parisian Art Studios

In the modern era, Paris served as a showcase for the 20th-century avant-garde, which continues to live on in the city today through its famous art collections and preserved artists’ studios and workshops. The photographic series by exhibition curator Adam Štěch focuses on selected art studios and, in many cases, the living spaces that were once imbued with the creative energy of artistic experiments and visions.

Most of the studios that Štěch included in his series date from the first half of the 20th century, specifically the 1920s and 1930s. These buildings are dominated by the then-emerging modernism and Art Deco styles. Their architects include leading figures of interwar French architecture, such as Auguste Perret, Le Corbusier, Pierre Patout, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Theo van Doesburg, and others.

The exhibition was created in 2024 for the Winternitz Villa in Prague.
